Reviving Mavrud in the mountains of Leskovik

A family-run estate of 16 hectares at 750–780 m, growing Mavrud and indigenous Debinë grapes beside international varieties.

Introduction

In 2008, Maksim Fejzulla and his wife Diana bought their first six hectares in the mountains of Leskovik, close to the Greek border. They replanted grapes with a long history in the area — Mavrud and the indigenous Debinë e Bardhë and Debinë e Zezë — and have grown the estate to around 16 hectares. The first wines followed in 2013, and consultant winemaker Bledar Laçi has guided production since 2016.

Why we featured them

Why we featured them: The vineyards sit at 750–780 metres on south-facing slopes of calcareous soil, where warm summers, cold winters and sharp swings between day and night slow the ripening. When an underground thermal lake, Lake Neuron, was discovered a few kilometres away in 2025, the estate answered with Neuron, a wine made only from Mavrud. Its 2019 vintage won a silver award at the Balkans International Wine Competition in 2026, joining a silver for its Mavrud & Merlot at Wine & Stories 2024 in Berat and a People's Choice award for best local red at Food & Drink Expo 2023. Visitors can walk the vineyards, tour the cellar, taste the wines with local food and stay at the estate's guesthouse.
